Peter Claver

Petrus Claver (* 1580 in Verdú, Katalonien; † 9. September 1654 in Cartagena, Kolumbien) war ein spanischer Jesuit, Missionar und Priester. Er ist der Schutzheilige Kolumbiens.

Er trat mit 22 Jahren in den Jesuitenorden ein und wurde bereits während seines Theologiestudiums nach Westindien gesandt. Danach ging er nach Kolumbien, zuerst in die Stadt Santa Fé de Bogotá, anschließend nach Cartagena. Hier wurde er 1616 zum Priester geweiht. Cartagena war der Hauptumschlaghafen für den Handel mit Sklaven aus Afrika. Petrus wirkte hier 38 Jahre in selbstloser Nächstenliebe für die Sklaven. Er unterrichtete sie als Lehrer, führte sie in den Glauben ein, taufte und versorgte sie medizinisch. Weil er sich besonders der Kranken, Aussätzigen, Sterbenden und Gefangenen annahm, erhielt er den Ehrentitel "Apostel von Cartagena", wo er auch am 8. September 1654 starb.

1888 wurde er von Papst Leo XIII. heiliggesprochen und 1896 zum Patron der "Mission unter Negern" ernannt. Petrus Claver wird als Schutzheiliger Kolumbiens verehrt. Nach ihm ist die 1894 von Maria Theresia Ledochówska gegründete und in Afrika wirkende Sodalität der Missionsschwestern benannt.

In Deutschland feiert die katholische Kirche seinen Gedenktag am 9. September (nicht gebotener Gedenktag).
