Der Peak Flow ist ein Messwert in der Medizin, der angibt, mit welcher Geschwindigkeit eine Person Luft aus ihrer Lunge blasen kann. Es ist ein wichtiges Hilfsmittel zur Diagnose, Einschätzung des Therapieerfolgs und zur Verlaufskontrolle bei Asthma bronchiale. Gemessen wird dieser mit einem Peak-Flow-Meter oder einem Spirometer.

Ein Peak-Flow-Meter ist eine kleines, handliches (etwa handgroßes) Gerät aus Kunststoff, das Asthmatikern von Ärzten als Hilfsmittel rezeptiert werden kann. Es ist gut zur täglichen Überwachung des Asthma-Schweregrades einsetzbar und dient zur Selbsteinschätzung und -kontrolle. Bei modernen Geräten sind bereits Ampelzonen eingezeichnet (Prozentwerte ausgehend vom ermittelten Bestwert). Die Peak-Flow-Messung sollte anfangs zum Beispiel zweimal täglich erfolgen und auf einem Diagramm eingezeichnet oder in einem Verlaufstagebuch dokumentiert werden. Damit können Arzt und Patient sehen, ob die Therapie erfolgreich ist. Außerdem soll in allen Atemnotsituationen gemessen werden, um die Notwendigkeit von Medikamenten-Inhalationen sofort einschätzen zu können.

Ein Spirometer ist ein Gerät, das in Arztpraxen zum Messen der Lungenfunktion eingesetzt wird.

Bei gesunden Menschen liegt der Peak-Flow-Wert etwa zwischen 400 und 700 l/min. Bei Personen mit Atembeschwerden, wie zum Beispiel Asthma bronchiale, liegt der Wert darunter. Bei Asthmatikern können sich die Atemwege verengen, dann strömt die Luft langsamer aus der Lunge. Das Messen des Peak Flow dient dazu, die Schwere einer Atemstörung selbst einzuschätzen - etwa so wie das Blutdruckmessen bei Patienten mit Bluthochdruck.
