Pauline Kael

Pauline Kael (* 19. Juni 1919 in Petaluma, Kalifornien; † 3. September 2001 in Great Barrington, Massachusetts) war eine US-amerikanische Filmkritikerin.

Leben und Werk

Sie studierte von 1936 bis 1940 Philosophie an der University of California, Berkeley. Anschließend leitete sie zwei Kinos und machte experimentelle Kurzfilme. Sie schrieb Filmkritiken für verschiedene Publikationen und machte eine wöchentliche Kinosendung im Radio.

Von 1968 bis 1991 schrieb sie für die Zeitschrift The New Yorker. Sie galt in dieser Zeit als einflussreichste Filmkritikerin der USA. Während der 60er und 70er Jahre hat sich Kael in ihren Texten stark für das New Hollywood-Kino engagiert. Zwischen 1965 und 1991 erschienen zehn Bände mit ihren Texten. 1994 erschien die Anthologie For Keeps - 30 Years at the Movies, in der ihre wichtigsten Texte versammelt sind.
