Das Pan-STARRS (Panoramic Survey Telescope And Rapid Response System) ist ein geplantes System zur kontinuierlichen Beobachtung des Sternenhimmels. Mit seiner Hilfe sollen ab 2010 eine große Anzahl neuer Asteroiden, Kometen und veränderlicher Sterne entdeckt werden.

Es soll aus vier 1,8 m Teleskopen auf dem Mauna Kea und Haleakala in Hawaii bestehen, die zur Reduktion von Bild- und Messfehlern gleichzeitig dasselbe Himmelsgebiet beobachten sollen. First light des Prototyp Teleskop PS1 auf dem Haleakala war im Juni 2006.[1] Das zweite Teleskop, PS2, soll 2013 in Betrieb genommen werden.[2] Ein Pan-STARRS-Teleskop besitzt mit 3° ein sehr großes Gesichtsfeld, das durch drei etwa 50 cm durchmessende Korrektor-Linsen nach den beiden Spiegeln Cassegrain-Anordnug erreicht wird;[3] das sich ergebende großformatige Bild wird mit einem 1,4 Milliarden Pixel CCD-Sensor (64×64 Sensoren mit je 600×600 Pixel) erfasst. Jeder Sensor kann während einer Aufnahme das Bild vertikal und horizontal verschieben, um eine durch Luftunruhe verursachte Bildbewegung auszugleichen.

Im Juni 2011 wurde mit Pan-STARRS 1 ein Komet entdeckt und C/2011 L4 (PANSTARRS) benannt.[4]
