Der Palo Santo (Bulnesia arborea) (span. palo santo „heiliges Holz“) gehört zur Familie der Zygophyllaceae. Er blüht gelb und hat hartes, harziges Holz. Der Baum stammt von den Antillen, aus Zentralamerika und dem Norden Südamerikas.

Die Rinde des Baumes wurde von den Indios als Heilmittel gegen Syphilis verwendet. Die Spanier, die damals in Südamerika waren, haben das Mittel mit über den Ozean nach Europa genommen und es dort für teures Geld verkauft und gegen die dort grassierenden Syphilis-Epidemien eingesetzt.

Palo Santo gilt als ein Allheilmittel. Er wirkt vor allem verdauungsfördernd und beruhigend. Er wird ebenfalls bei Asthma, Bronchitis und zur Steigerung der Immunabwehr eingesetzt.

Ein Tee aus der Rinde wird so gemacht: Einen Esslöffel Palo Santo in 1 Liter Wasser 15 bis 20 Minuten köcheln lassen, dann abseien.
