Pahu

Pahu ist eine hawaiische Bezeichnung[1] für traditionelle Trommeln in verschiedener Größe. Die Pahu ist eins der Instrumente, die die polynesischen Einwanderer bei der Besiedlung Hawaiʻis aus Tahiti mitbrachten.

Der Korpus besteht aus einem mit Haifischhaut bespannten ausgehöhlten Baumabschnitt, der am unteren Ende oft mit durchbrochenem Schnitzwerk verziert ist. Das Trommelfell ist mit Schnüren befestigt. Das Anfertigen eines solchen Instruments nur mit handbetriebenen Werkzeugen gehört zur traditionellen Ausbildung eines Kumu Hula (Hula Meister-Lehrers) in Hawaiʻi.

Die Trommeln werden mit der Hand geschlagen.
