Das P.S.1 (P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center) ist ein Museum für zeitgenössische Kunst und eine Außenstelle des Museum of Modern Art. Es befindet sich in Queens, einem Stadtteil von New York in der USA.
Geschichte

1971 gründete Alanna Heiss P.S.1 als ein Ausstellungsgebäude mit dem Namen The Institute of Art and Urban Resources Inc. Seitdem stellen junge Künstler in P.S.1 ihre Kunstwerke aus, die sie zuvor auch dort in monatelanger Arbeit erschaffen haben. Ausgeschrieben bedeutet P.S.1 Primary School One, da das Gelände früher einer Grundschule gehörte.
Konzept
In P.S.1 wird nicht nur ausgestellt. Hier finden viele Aktivitäten statt wie Mitgestaltung des Gebäudes innen und außen durch Künstler, pädagogische Programme für Kinder und Jugendliche und Vermittlung zwischen Künstlern und Publikum. Es gibt Atelierräume, in denen Künstler aus aller Welt gemeinsam arbeiten und diskutieren und sich austauschen. Von P.S.1 werden auch Publikationen erstellt. Manche Kunstwerke werden in ungewöhnlicher Umgebung ausgestellt. So findet man etwa eine Installation im Toilettenraum oder Graffiti im Treppenhaus. Alles wird in die Kunst einbezogen: Flure, Keller, Dachstuhl, Sanitäranlagen und Cafe-Raum.

WPS1 (WPS1 Art Radio) ist eine Internet-Radiostation auf MP3-Basis, die von P.S.1 organisiert wird. Dort werden über 1200 Musik-Streams angeboten, die aus einem Mix aus Music, Diskussionen und historischen Aufnahmen bestehen.
