Oxbridge

Oxbridge ist eine Bezeichnung für die Universitäten von Oxford und Cambridge. Diese sind die beiden ältesten Universitäten im Vereinigten Königreich und der englischsprachigen Welt.

Bei „Oxbridge“ handelt es sich also um ein Kofferwort der Namen der beiden Universitäten, die einerseits seit jeher Konkurrenten sind, andererseits aber beide traditionell - zusammen mit Eton - als Eliteschmieden Großbritanniens gelten.

Die Bezeichnung Oxbridge konnotiert darüber hinaus, als soziologischer Habitusbegriff, auch die Exklusivität von Bildungsinstitutionen und den damit verbundenen Anspruch auf Zugang zu den wichtigen Eliten des Landes.
