Operating bezeichnet den Betrieb eines Rechenzentrums bzw. einer Softwarelösung. Operating umfasst im einzelnen diese Tätigkeiten:

  • Installation von Software
  • Installation von Aktualisierungen
  • Datensicherung, Datenrestoration
  • Benutzer einrichten, Berechtigungen einstellen
  • Überwachung der Logs
  • Wartung der Hardware
  • Überwachung von Systemprozessen
  • Lizenzmanagement
  • Datenreorganisation
  • Netzwerk einrichten, konfigurieren, überwachen
  • Leistung überwachen, gegebenenfalls optimieren
  • Drucker konfigurieren, warten
  • Überwachung von Stapelverarbeitungsläufen
  • Überwachung, Zuteilung von Plattenplatz
  • Wechseln von Medien
  • Überwachen und Einrichten zyklisch auszuführender Jobs
  • technische Unterstützung von Anwendern

Von operatorlosem Betrieb spricht man, wenn das System keine Wartung benötigt. Die AS/400 beispielsweise galt in ihren Anfängen als operatorloses System.
