OOBI steht für "Out of Band Infrastructure" und damit das Gegenteil von In Band.

"Ouf of Band" bedeutet konkret:

  • Kontrolle über die Server, selbst bei Netzwerkausfall
  • Sicherer Fernzugriff auf die Server
  • Zugriff via serielle Schnittstelle oder direkte Steuerung der Eingabegeräte (KVM)

Grundsätzlich kann jederzeit die Netzwerkschnittstelle eines Servers oder gar das ganze Netzwerk ausfallen. Somit hat der Administrator keine Chance mehr den Server "In Band" (über Ethernet) zu erreichen und der Fehler muss vor Ort am Terminal behoben werden.

Nicht so mit dem Einsatz von "Out of Band Infrastructure"- Produkten. Durch deren Hilfe ist es möglich die Rechner über eine "Hintertür" zu erreichen, entweder mit Konsolenservern über die serielle Schnittstelle (RS232) oder durch die direkte Steuerung von Tastatur, Maus und Monitor mit sogenannten KVM-Switches. Im Falle des absoluten Notfalls besteht die Möglichkeit mit Hilfe von Powermanagern und dem IPDU-Protokoll (Intelligent Power Distribution Unit) die Stromverbindung von Servern zu trennen bzw. sie hart neuzustarten.
