Om Puri (Hindi: ओम पुरी, Om Purī; * 18. Oktober 1950 in Ambala, Haryana) ist ein indischer Filmschauspieler, der sowohl in indischen als auch englischen Filmproduktionen mitwirkte.

Leben und Wirken

Om Puri erwarb seinen Abschluss am Film and Television Institute of India, der staatlichen Schauspielschule in Pune. Außerdem war er mit Naseeruddin Shah im Abschlussjahrgang 1973 der renommierten National School of Drama. Er zählt neben Shah, Shabana Azmi, Kulbhushan Kharbanda und Smita Patil zur Gruppe der Schauspieler des New Indian Cinema der 1970er und 1980er Jahre, die sich als Schauspieler und weniger als Filmstars verstanden und sich eher in künstlerisch ambitionierten Filmprojekten engagierten.

Auszeichnungen

Om Puri wurde 1982 und 1984 jeweils mit einem National Film Award als Bester Hauptdarsteller ausgezeichnet und erhielt 1980 einen Filmfare Award als Bester Nebendarsteller. Im Juli 2004 wurde ihm für sein Wirken in englischsprachigen Filmen der Order of the British Empire verliehen.
