Off-Off-Broadway

In New York City werden die Theater in drei große Kategorien eingeteilt: Broadway, Off-Broadway und Off-Off-Broadway.

Geschichte

Früher war diese Einteilung wörtlich zu nehmen und daher einfach nachzuvollziehen: Die Broadway-Theater lagen direkt am "Great White Way", die Off-Broadway-Bühnen befanden sich etwas abseits, und ganz außerhalb des theater district gab es noch die Off-Off-Broadway-Theater. Wegen der Entfernung zum Broadway waren die Off-Broadway-Theater billiger zu mieten, und oft verlagerte man Stücke, die sich hier bewährt hatten, nach kurzer Laufzeit auf eine Broadway-Bühne. Berühmte Beispiele für diese Vorgehensweise sind die Musicals Hair (Off-Broadway-Premiere am 17. Oktober 1967, Broadway-Premiere am 29. April 1968) und A Chorus Line (Off-Broadway am 16. April, Broadway am 25. Juli 1975).

Mittlerweile hat sich sowohl die Einteilung der Spielstätten, als auch die Einstellung zu den dort gezeigten Stücken etwas verändert: Ein Theater gilt heute – selbst wenn es etwas abseits vom Broadway liegt – als Broadway-Theater, wenn es über 500 Sitzplätze hat, bei einem Fassungsvermögen zwischen 100 und 500 Zuschauern spricht man von einem Off-Broadway-Theater, darunter von einem Off-Off-Broadway-Theater.

In den letzten Jahrzehnten ist man auch immer mehr dazu übergegangen, Stücke von vornherein für kleinere Theater zu konzipieren. Off-Broadway-Musicals sind heute im Allgemeinen nicht mehr große Produktionen, die wegen unsicherer Erfolgschancen in kleinen Theatern landen, sondern kleine, spritzige Stücke, die ein deutliches Kontrastprogramm zu den aufwändigen Broadway-Shows darstellen. So kam etwa 1982, als am Broadway gerade die pathetischen, durchkomponierten Werke im Stil von Les Misérables im Kommen waren, das mittlerweile zum Kultstück avancierte Off-Broadway-Musical Little Shop of Horrors heraus.

Im deutschen Sprachraum hat die amerikanische Terminologie die Begriffe Off-Theater bzw. Off-Bühne und Off-Off-Bühne angeregt.
