Nihonga

Nihonga (jap. 日本画, dt. japanische Malerei) wurde 1890 von dem US-amerikanischen Orientalisten Ernest Francisco Fenollosa und dem japanischen Kunsthistoriker Tenshin Okakura mit dem Ziel eingeführt, die verloren geglaubten Techniken alter japanischer Malerei wiederzubeleben und zugleich mit den neuesten Errungenschaften der westlichen Kunst zu vereinigen.

In der Regel parallel zum Aufstieg der japanischen Malerei in der Vorkriegszeit.
