Die Amerikanische Lotosblume (Nelumbo lutea) bildet zusammen mit dem Indischen Lotos (Nelumbo nucifera) die Pflanzengattung Lotosblumen (Nelumbo).

Merkmale

Die Amerikanische Lotosblume ist eine ausdauernde, krautige Wasserpflanze mit Rhizomen. Die 2 m oder mehr lang gestielten Laubblätter sind peltat. Die runde Blattspreite weist einen Durchmesser von 50 bis 80 cm auf.

Die zwittrigen Blüten weisen einen Durchmesser von bis zu 25 cm und stehen 1 bis 1,5 m über dem Wasser. Die vielen leuchtend gelben Blütenhüllblätter sind 1 bis 13 cm lang; die äußersten ein bis fünf bleiben lange erhalten. Die Staubbeutel sind 1 bis 2 cm lang. Es sind viele freien Fruchtblätter vorhanden. Die Bestäubung erfolgt durch Käfer.

Die mehr oder weniger kugelige Frucht besitzt eine Größe von 10 bis 16 × 8 bis 13 mm.

Vorkommen

Die Amerikanische Lotosblume findet man im Osten der Vereinigten Staaten.
