Nathan Hale (* 6. Juni 1755 in Coventry, Connecticut; † 22. September 1776 in New York[1]) war ein US-amerikanischer Offizier, Lehrer und einer der historischen Helden der USA.

Leben

Hale machte in Yale 1773 seinen College-Abschluss und unterrichtete in der Folge in East Haddam, schließlich in New London, Connecticut. Nathan trat der Armee erst am 6. Juli 1776 bei und wurde schnell in den Rang eines Captains befördert. Fünf seiner Brüder nahmen auf amerikanischer Seite an den Schlachten gegen England in Lexington und Concord teil. Am 22. September 1776 wurde Nathan Hale von den Briten gehängt, da er beschuldigt wurde, ein Spion zu sein. Auf dem Weg zum Galgen sprach Hale seine berühmten letzten Worte: „Ich habe nur zu bedauern, dass ich nur ein Leben habe, welches ich meinem Land schenken kann.“

Er war ein Mitglied des von George Washington gegründeten Culper Rings, einem Vorläufer des amerikanischen Geheimdienstes.

Neben der Hale-Statue vor dem Tribune Tower in Chicago, findet sich eine weitere vor dem CIA-Hauptquartier in Langley. Zudem wurde ein Atom-U-Boot nach Hale benannt.
